A few years ago, job seekers googled "restaurant jobs near me" and scrolled through a page of links. Now more of them are just asking ChatGPT to find the job for them. If your postings aren't set up to be picked up by AI, you may be invisible to a growing slice of hospitality talent.
This is where AEO comes in, and it's worth understanding before you post your next role.
What Is AEO?
AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization, and it’s the next step of digital optimization. Traditional SEO gets your job posting to rank on a search results page, while AEO gets your posting pulled directly into an AI generated answer. The end result of good AEO is that when someone asks ChatGPT, Google's AI Overview, or Perplexity to find them a bartending job downtown, the tool serves up real openings instead of a list of links with potentially relevant job postings.
AI tools don't just rank pages anymore. They also read, summarize, and recommend based on the content they can access. That means that if your posting isn't structured in a way these tools can understand, it won't get suggested… no matter how great the role is.
Perhaps most importantly, job seekers are making it clear that chat is a part of their search process now. A recent survey of U.S. job seekers found that 36% are already using AI somewhere in their job search, and 79% of those are using ChatGPT specifically. Gen Z leads the pack at nearly 47%, but it's not just a young talent trend.
Let’s dive into how you can better optimize your job postings so the right candidates find you.
Where to Post So AI Can Actually Find You
Not every job board gets picked up equally. AI tools tend to pull from sources that are widely indexed and well structured, so prioritize:
-
Indeed. ChatGPT now has a direct job search integration pulling from Indeed listings, making it one of the most important boards for AI visibility.
-
LinkedIn. This site is still a heavyweight for both human recruiters and AI tools scanning for openings.
-
Your own career page, done right. If it includes proper job posting markup (more on that below), Google for Jobs and other AI tools can pull straight from your site.
The Details That Make a Posting AI Friendly
AI tools favor postings that clearly answer the questions a candidate would ask out loud. Make sure every posting spells out:
-
The real job title. Skip internal codes or cutesy titles. "Line Cook" beats "Kitchen Ninja" when AI is doing the sorting.
-
Exact location. Add the city and neighborhood, not just "multiple locations." If you have multiple locations, then render a job posting for each and every location where you’ll be hiring.
-
Pay range. Vague listings get skipped over by both candidates and AI answer engines. Make it clear what you’ll pay by the hour, or the salary range you’re considering.
-
Schedule and employment type. Full time, part time, overnight shifts, whatever applies. Make the job type clear so that when people have parameters about their availability, the right jobs come up for them.
-
A posted date and how long it's valid. Stale listings lose visibility fast, and chatbots are smart enough to stop recommending postings they can’t validate are still open.
Pro tip: If your career site or ATS supports structured job posting data (called schema markup), use it. It's the behind the scenes language that tells AI tools "here's a real, current job, and here's everything you need to know about it."
The Trap of Locked Down Job Boards
Plenty of hospitality companies post to internal job boards, private hospitality networks, or niche association sites that require a login. These can be great for reaching a specific, pre-vetted audience. We recommend you continue posting to them!
But here's the catch: if a board is gated or unindexed, AI tools can't see it at all. That posting might be perfect for an insider crowd, but it's completely invisible to the growing number of candidates asking AI to find them a job.
Don’t abandon these niche boards, just know that you can’t rely on them only.
